    Philosophy of Care

The word "patient" comes from the Latin word patior meaning "one who suffers." Suffering can inhabit many forms, including physical, psychological, or spiritual distress. Most people present to physicians for physical symptoms, but I believe the disease fails to improve without an awareness of the connection between mind, body, and spirit as a whole. One is not separate from the other.

In my practice of Family Medicine, I try to emphasize this interconnection, and help patients approach their specific condition with compassion. We can be so hard on ourselves during stressful times, especially when these times lead to illness. In addition to the appropriate therapeutic intervention, it often helps to nurture our bodies with kind attention. Modern medicine offers so many technological advances and various treatment options. Often we heal physically, but may completely ignore other aspects of our life that need closer attention, and not just a quick fix.

The physician/patient relationship is a sacred relationship that requires both an empathic listener and an empowered patient. No one can give you permission to take charge of your own health like you can. I also believe in preventive healthcare, in suggesting lifestyle modifications that can help decrease your risk for chronic diseases.

In the words of Rachel Naomi Remen, a physician, a professor of medicine, a therapist, and a long-term survivor of chronic illness:

"Everyone alive has suffered. It is the wisdom gained from our wounds and from our own experiences of suffering that makes us able to heal. Becoming expert has turned out to be less important than remembering and trusting the wholeness in myself and everyone else. Expertise cures, but wounded people can best be healed by other wounded people. Only other wounded people can understand what is needed, for the healing of suffering is compassion, not expertise."

I hope to meet you soon and help facilitate your journey to wellness.
