Yumi Ando, M.D., MPH

Yumi Ando, M.D., MPH, grew up in New York City. Dr. Ando majored in East Asian Studies at Harvard University, where she graduated magna cum laude. She received her master's degree in international public health at the University of Michigan before pursuing a career in medicine.

Dr. Ando graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1996 and completed her residency in internal medicine at Stanford in 1999. During both medical school and her residency, she received awards for excellence in patient care. She practiced medicine at the Menlo Clinic in Menlo Park before moving to Washington, D.C. to pursue a lifelong dream of working on international health issues.

For two-and-a-half years, Dr. Ando worked at the U.S. State Department, where she received a Meritorious Honor Award for her coordination and oversight of refugee health programs. During this time, Dr. Ando kept her clinical skills current by serving as a primary care physician at a clinic that provides care for medically underserved patients in Washington, D.C., and as an urgent care physician at Inova Urgent Care Center in Virginia. In the summer of 2005, she returned to the Bay Area and joined the Encina Practice after deciding to return to full-time patient care and establish meaningful long-term relationships with patients.

Dr. Ando has interests in evidence-based medicine and women's health. She is proficient in Japanese and French.

Dr. Ando lives with her husband, who is an internal medicine physician at Stanford, their two sons and two dogs. Her hobbies include hiking, cooking and soccer. She is also an avid knitter and enjoys knitting sweaters for friends.
