"Philanthropic donors have an opportunity to make a real difference by funding tangible gifts like new breast care equipment that translate directly to improved patient care. If people want to give to a worthy cause that is highly likely to touch the lives of their friends and family, this is it."

—Rita Sohlich, M.D., lead radiologist at the Breast Imaging Center

Although breast cancer survival rates have improved in recent years, the number of new cases is rising. One out of eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life, and the risk of developing the disease increases with age. A woman’s chance of developing breast cancer at age 60 is 10 times higher than at age 50. In 2009, Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) breast cancer surgeon Runi Chattopadhyay, M.D., and her surgical colleagues at the Cancer Care Center treated about 200 women with breast cancer, more than double the number treated at PAMF 10 years ago.

“We are seeing so many new breast cancer cases, and we didn’t have enough space in our general radiology department to keep up with the demand,” Dr. Chattopadhyay said. PAMF responded by creating a world-class facility dedicated to the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer. The 20,000-square-foot building located on the campus of PAMF’s Palo Alto Center opened its doors to patients in November 2010.

PAMF is already a recognized leader in breast care services. This year PAMF’s Breast Imaging Center at the Palo Alto Center received American College of Radiology certification for its stereotactic biopsy unit and was designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. Over the past four years, PAMF has reduced the wait time between detecting a breast lump and reaching a definitive diagnosis to about a week compared to three or four weeks at most other health care providers. A primary goal of the new Center will be to reduce that wait time to just 48 hours.

PAMF is currently seeking additional funds to help purchase state-of-the-art equipment for the Breast Imaging Center.
