More and more charitable gifts are being made with non-cash assets, such as stocks of publicly traded companies. This is due in part to the remarkable rise in stock prices over the past few years. Many donors find that the values of their stocks have risen to such a degree that they can make a gift and receive a significant tax deduction.
If you make a gift of stock, the date of the gift -- when you lose control of the asset -- is the date the stock is received in the charity's account or the postmark date if mailed. When making an end-of-year gift of stock, be careful to allow ample time for your instructions to be carried out. If the transfer is not made on or before December 31, the IRS will not be forgiving. A gift not made in 2008, for instance, is not deductible on your 2008 tax return if it is after the 31st.
