Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are older antidepressants (first-generation). They generally have more side effects than newer (second-generation) antidepressants such as Reference serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and Reference other second-generation antidepressants such as bupropion (Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR) and duloxetine (Cymbalta).
