Finasteride for Male Hair Loss
Why It Is Used
Finasteride was originally used to treat enlarged prostate glands (Reference benign prostatic hyperplasia Opens New Window). In a much lower dose, it is now also used to treat inherited hair loss in men (Reference androgenetic alopecia Opens New Window), the most common cause of Reference hair loss Opens New Window.
Finasteride is not effective in postmenopausal women.Reference 1 It is not approved for women by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Women and children should not use finasteride.
