    Hematology

Hematology is the study and treatment of diseases associated with blood cells and the blood forming organs. Hematologists are doctors who treat blood diseases. The first curable cancers, lymphoma and leukemia in the 1950's were blood disorders treated by chemotherapy, and because of that, hematology and oncology are closely linked.

Since medical oncologists prescribe chemotherapy medications that may produce side effects in the blood system, oncologists and hematologists often work together during treatment. Some doctors have a dual specialty of both hematology and medical oncology.

Hematology blood disorders include anemia, disorders of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, bleeding conditions or problems with excessive blood clotting, and cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. Hematology includes blood problems that are related to cancer and other that are not directly related to cancer. Some blood problems may develop into cancers of the blood system.

    Common blood disorders include:

    • Anemias -- iron deficiency, aplastic anemia, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, vitamin B12 deficiency
    • Bleeding Disorders -- Hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease
    • Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplantation
    • Disorders of Iron Metabolism -- Iron deficiency and overload, hemochromatosis
    • Hodgkin's Disease
    • Leukemias
    • Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas
    • Platelet Disorders
Although many disorders can affect the components of blood, hematology focuses on the following three general divisions of study:
    • Disorders involving red blood cells: anemias, hemoglobin and platelets
    • Disorders involving white blood cells: leukemias, Hodgkin's Disease, neutropenias, myeloproliferative disorders, myelodysplastic syndrome and lymphomas
    • Coagulation disorders: bleeding or hemophilia, platelets and recurrent thrombosis
