Internal Medicine and Subspecialties
Many internists focus on general internal medicine, but others choose to study in one of 13 internal medicine subspecialties. For instance, cardiologists are internal medicine doctors who have further training in heart disease. Subspecialty training (often called a "fellowship") requires one to three years of additional study and practice.
