    Arrhythmia Detection

A number of arrhythmia detection modalities are available at Cardiovascular Associates of the Peninsula.

Diagnostic testing for arrhythmias can be performed using either 24 or 48 hour Holter monitoring (continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) tape recording) as well as event monitoring using memory loop event monitors and non-memory loop event monitors. Memory loop event monitors record the last five minutes of ECG, continuously overwriting the record until a button is pressed to "freeze" the recording. This would be done if symptoms are felt by the patient. The "frozen" ECG can then be transmitted by telephone for analysis 24 hours a day. While 24 or 48 hour Holter monitoring gives a limited evaluation interval, event monitors may be kept for three or four weeks to allow for documentation of symptomatic heart rhythm disturbances which are less frequent.

Implantable loop recorders can also be used when severe symptoms of arrhythmia are infrequent. These small recorders (the size of a small package of gum) last up to year and can be implanted as an outpatient.

T-wave Alternans treadmill testing is also available to risk stratify individuals with heart disease to determine if they are at high risk for dangerous rhythm disturbances.
