Burlingame Surgical Treatment of Breast Cancer
The breast surgical oncology specialists at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) Burlingame Center are surgeons who specialize in breast surgery. They provide consultation and management for both women and men with benign or malignant breast conditions and also high-risk patients.
Surgical options for the treatment of early-stage breast cancer include mastectomy and breast-conserving surgery (also called lumpectomy). Mastectomy is the removal of the entire breast, while breast-conserving surgery removes only the tumor with a cancer-free margin (edge) of tissue around the tumor. Surgery is often combined with other types of treatment such as radiation, chemotherapy, hormone and targeted therapy to achieve greater success.
The doctors specialize in an extensive array of surgical options, which include:
- Excisional biopsy
- Lumpectomy
- Simple mastectomy
- Skin-sparing mastectomy
- Nipple-sparing mastectomy
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy
- Axillary lymph node dissection
- Oncoplastic surgery
They also work closely with highly-trained plastic surgeons for breast reconstruction evaluation and incorporate it into your surgical options.
They are integrated with the Mills-Peninsula Women's Center and the Breast Health Services, which is a part of the Dorothy E. Schneider Cancer Center.
In addition, the Multi-Disciplinary Breast Tumor Board, a dedicated team of breast cancer specialists, meet weekly. Women (or men) with a known diagnosis of breast cancer can be seen at our Multi-Specialty Breast Care Clinic and are seen by several breast cancer specialists who will be involved in their care, such our breast surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists.
