What is a Nephrologist?
Nephrologists diagnose causes of kidney failure, and prescribe appropriate treatment, such as medication, diet changes or dialysis. If none of these treatments work, a kidney transplant would be performed by a transplant surgeon. They are responsible for medical care during dialysis treatments.
Nephrologists also may be responsible for patient care before and after a kidney transplant. Before the transplant operation can take place, medical problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure must be well controlled.
