PAMF Named Official Health Care Provider
of San Jose Earthquakes
April 2008
Local major league soccer team the San Jose Earthquakes recently named PAMF as its official health care provider. PAMF sports medicine physician Colin Eakin, M.D., and internal medicine physician Luis Folan, M.D., will head a team of doctors to oversee all aspects of the team’s care, including care for the team’s staff and players’ families.
“This is a terrific opportunity for PAMF,” said Dr. Eakin. “Our comprehensive expertise as the area’s top multispecialty clinic, combined with our experience in caring for elite athletes, made us a natural choice for the team.”
PAMF has considerable experience caring for top professional athletes, a key consideration in the team’s decision. The Earthquakes join the Oakland Raiders, whose care is overseen by sports medicine physician Warren King, M.D., as another professional team cared for by PAMF.
Sports Medicine Doctors Among First to
Receive Certification
Drs. King and Eakin also recently received subspecialty certification in sports medicine by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. This is the first year that the prestigious certification was awarded, making Drs. Eakin and King among the first sports medicine physicians in the country to obtain certification.
What does it mean if an orthopedist is certified in sports medicine? Being certified demonstrates that a doctor has achieved a high level of proficiency in various areas of sports medicine. To be eligible for certification, orthopedic surgeons have to show evidence of their practice within sports medicine and pass a rigorous exam demonstrating their knowledge on a variety of topics on sports medicine.
“It is another indication to PAMF patients that the care they receive is second to none, whether they are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior,” said Dr. King.
