Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center Upgrades Fetal Monitoring
Keeping tabs on moms and babies during labor is now even easier for doctors, midwives and nurses at our Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center (SMSC).
Last week, Rob Bremmer, the hospital community board chair, and Jacci Sterling, director of Perinatal Services, cut the ribbon on a new nursing station that features an upgraded fetal monitoring system.
Now, nurses can view all of the fetal monitors in use on a single screen in the nursing station. In addition, doctors and midwives can log in remotely to view the monitors over the Internet.
"When the nurse has a question or concern, the doctor or midwife can go online to review the results from the fetal monitor," Sterling explains. "Of course, this does not replace the doctor or midwife coming in when there is an emergency, but often you just want to discuss what is happening and develop a new plan of care."
In addition, all of the fetal monitors are now linked to the individual patient rooms, so if a fetal monitor detects a problem in one patient, an alarm can alert nurses in other patient rooms and allow them to respond to a possible emergency quickly.
