PAMF, San Carlos School District Pack Full House for First Parent Workshop
'Back to School: Strengthening Healthy Families'
The Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), along with the San Carlos School District (SCSD) and the San Carlos Educational Foundation (SCEF), on Oct. 5 hosted a standing-room-only crowd of local parents for its first of six free parent education workshops at the Central Middle School Library in San Carlos.
The workshops will run through the 2005-2006 school year and cover a variety of parenting topics from "A Recipe for Healthy Eating" to "Talking to Your Kids About Sex." Workshop presenters include licensed clinical social workers; registered dietitians; researchers; and physicians from PAMF and Parents Place, a local organization that specializes in parent education.
The Oct. 5 workshop, titled "Back to School: Strengthening Healthy Families," discussed some of the unique challenges parents face as they raise children in today's world. Workshop presenter Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, LCSW, a parent educator with Parents Place, talked to parents about how to establish healthy schedules, find balance in their own families and help their children build positive homework habits.
"These days parents are struggling with numerous commitments," said Moskowitz-Sweet. "Children have a variety of after-school activities available to them and parents have their own professional and personal obligations. Also, there is a growing amount of homework that has to get done. These all contribute to the need for a healthy balance for the entire family."
"The turnout for the first workshop was outstanding and provided parents with wonderful information about raising healthy families," said Patty Wool, Ed.D., SCSD superintendent. "The workshops also support our principals and teachers in their daily work with children."
