PAMF, SCSD Present Parent Education in San Carlos

Workshops Teach Parents How to Raise Media Savvy Kids, Find Balance in Today's Ever-Demanding World and More

Following the success of the first series, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), San Carlos School District (SCSD) and San Carlos Educational Foundation will once again present a series of free parent education workshops during the 2006-2007 school year.

"We are thrilled to have the Palo Alto Medical Foundation host quality workshops for the families of our community," said Patricia Wool, Ed.D., SCSD superintendent, who presented PAMF with an award this past May for the 2005-2006 parent education series. "Last year's presentations drew impressive audiences, proving that San Carlos parents want to take advantage of the best parenting tools available."

The first presentation, "The Overscheduled Family: Finding Balance in an Ever-Demanding World," will be presented by Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, LCSW, a parent educator with Parents Place on the Peninsula. The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 18, and will cover issues including:

  • Stress: The toxic brew of pressure and isolation for parents and kids.
  • The "good work ethic"? Blurring the distinction between work and home.
  • Overscheduling: Is there any way to avoid it?
  • Bucking the tide: If everyone is doing it, that doesn't mean it's good.
  • The protective shield of our home: Strategies for lowering stress and finding balance.

Subsequent workshops, which will be held through April 2007, include "Raising Media Savvy Kids: How to Keep Your Kids Safe and Smart;" Setting Limits and Saving Your Sanity;" "From Risk Taking to Responsibility: Helping Parents Navigate Adolescence;" and "Friendships: The Social Lives of Boys and Girls."

All presentations will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Multi-Use Room at Heather Elementary School located at 2757 Melendy Drive. Light refreshments will be served. The workshops are open to all parents of the San Carlos School District.
