Book Summary, "Get Out of My Life"
Get Out of My Life, but First Could You Drive Me & Cheryl to the Mall: A Parent's Guide to the New Teenager (2002)
By: Anthony E. Wolf
This book is a survival guide for parents who find themselves lost in the world of modern teens. Anthony E. Wolf, a clinical psychologist, covers material concerning school, sex, alcohol, drugs, suicide, step-parenting, divorce, and gay teens.
However, the appeal of this book is that he explains the reasons teens act the way they do in a manner that is funny and enlightening. He arms parents with strategies on how to speak to a teen and reassures parents that conversations are never perfect.
He believes parents should have rules, but acknowledges that the teen will sometimes break them. Usually the most a parent can hope for is "imperfect control."
