Book Summary, "Surviving Ophelia"
Surviving Ophelia: Mothers Share Their Wisdom in Navigating the Tumultuous Teenage Years (2002)
By: Cheryl Dellasega
Surviving Ophelia by Cheryl Dellasega – a clinician at Penn State's College of Medicine and a mother of three – is a response to Mary Pipher's book Reviving Ophelia about the struggle of adolescent girls trying to maintain a sense of self in a difficult world.
Like the Ophelia books before it, this book is composed of real life stories by mothers across the country who are struggling with raising a teenage girl in trouble. There are no solutions offered by the author, but the mothers offer parenting ideas with an assessment of its success or failure. The stories are conversational and honest and may be of value to mothers that are going through the same emotional roller coaster.
PAMF also provides parents and teachers with a book summary of Pipher's Ophelia book – Reviving Ophelia, found here.
