Sports Injury Handbook: Professional Advice for Amateur Athletes
by Allan M. Levy and Mark L. Fuerst (1993)
Dr. Levy is the team doctor for the New York Giants football team. This collaboration with Mr. Fuerst is a handbook for recreational athletes who want to keep in shape while preventing injuries. It is divided into sections concerning main body parts (i.e. the knee) and 19 specific sports (i.e. tennis). For example, you can look in the knee chapter to find out why it is sore, how to treat it and when to see a doctor. You can look in the tennis chapter to find out how to protect your knee while doing that particular sport. This is a well-laid-out handbook written in nontechnical language that covers topics such as:
- Which exercises cause unnecessary wear and tear on your body?
- What to do during the first critical few seconds following a sports injury?
- The conditioning, nutrition, and strength training techniques professional athletes use to stay in top physical shape
- Easy, step-by-step rehabilitative exercises you can perform at home
- Special precautions for women, children, and older athletes
