Fine Needle Aspiration

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a simple, safe procedure that helps provide information about the cause of a mass or lump. FNA is often one of the first tests a physician orders to determine whether a biopsy is necessary.

Fine needle aspirations are performed by a physician. The procedure involves the use of a very thin needle to remove cells and fluid from the mass. The specimen is then analyzed under a microscope in the Pathology Laboratory for signs of abnormality. The test results help doctors and surgeons determine a course of treatment.
