    Dr. Palaniappan is married with two children. Her hobbies used to include rock climbing and scuba diving, which she hopes to resume when her kids are older! She completed a marathon in 2001 and a triathalon in 2005, and still enjoys running when she gets a chance.

    Philosophy of care:
    Dr. Palaniappan is currently an assistant investigator at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute. Her research interests are gender and ethnic differences in insulin metabolism as it affects the incidence of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and coronary heart disease. She has explored this thesis in large national cohorts including the National Health and Nutrition Examination III (NHANES III), the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC), and the Insulin Resistance in Atherosclerosis Study(IRAS). She has recently completed a study examining the effects of weight loss on insulin resistance in South Asian Indian Women: The South Asian Indian Women Weight Loss Study (SAIWWLS: http://saiwwls.stanford.edu/). Her clinical interests are in preventive cardiology -- especially raising awareness of cardiovascular disease risk in South Asian Indians.
