Whenever someone asks me why I went into medicine, I always tell them "I did not choose medicine; medicine chose me." My medical career began in the Los Angeles area. I went to university and studied both biochemistry and religion. These two majors taught me that science and the arts are an integral part of living a fulfilling life.
I was fortunate enough to go to a medical school that emphasized a holistic approach to medicine. I learned to use my hands to treat patients, and that treating patients with my hands could be as powerful as taking medicine. The manual therapy that I learned was osteopathy.
I started doing yoga during medical school, and I enjoyed it so much that I trained to become a certified Bikram yoga instructor. Bikram yoga is the most therapeutic and healing form of yoga that I know. Yoga taught me to be more humble and has given me the strength to go through a very difficult time known as residency training.
During residency, I worked with the underserved population in the Los Angeles area. I saw patients who were very ill and had complex medical conditions. The work was gratifying, fun and challenging.
After residency, I got married and moved to the Bay Area, where I have lived since 2005. I worked as a hospitalist for three years, which allowed me to hone my skills as a physician.
I love being at PAMF. This is the first time in my life where I can do everything that I envisioned for myself in my career. I can treat my patients with my hands using osteopathic medicine or even acupuncture. I can also treat my patients with medicine. I feel like I have developed into a versatile physician for my patients.
In the future, I hope to learn different modalities of treatment. At the end of 2010, I hope to begin learning homeopathy and possibly begin to offer this in 2011 for my patients. I am always looking for ways to stay up-to-date on the latest treatments that I can offer my patients. In addition to being in Fremont, I will be going to the PAMF Dublin Center twice a month starting in March 2010.
