Philosophy of care:

Our patients at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) deserve access to the most advanced approaches to their health problems coupled with judgment borne from experience. To best ensure this, our physicians are in leadership positions in national organizations that are at the forefront of cancer related clinical research, health information technology and public policy.

As Director of Cancer Research, I serve as the PAMF Principal Investigator with the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, a National Cancer Institute sponsored research organization that includes Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard, University of Chicago and UCSF. Through this affiliation, we are able to offer clinical trials in a variety of malignant tumors which test new drugs and ideas for the treatment of cancer. In addition, we partner with both large pharmaceutical and local biotechnology companies to offer a broad range of choices to our patients.

PAMF has a national reputation for the advanced implementation of electronic health records (EHR) and we are at the center of the application of health information technology for the improvement of cancer care research, quality and patient support. My involvement includes membership in the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT), a federally constituted body that defines standards for EHR systems and I serve as the chair of the EHR Workgroup of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the professional society for oncology that represents 27,000 members in over 100 countries.

Both research and health information technology are deeply impacted by federal public policy and the American Society of Clinical Oncology is the recognized leading voice of cancer professionals in Washington. It is my privilege to serve as an elected board member of the Society for 2009-2012 and thereby help represent the concerns of cancer professionals and cancer patients on matters of legislation and federal regulatory policy.

Through these and other opportunities, our physicians, nurse practitioners and entire health care team strive to offer the latest advances in cancer care to each patient and use our experience to help inform those whose responsibility is to structure our nation's fight against cancer.
