    Making an Appointment

For a routine recheck visit, call 650-934-7144 during regular office hours and have your chart number available.

If you have worsening breathlessness or another urgent problem, let the receptionist know. Either you will get a return call or a work-in appointment that day.

If you feel you are having a life-threatening experience please call 9-1-1.

    How to Get a Referral
Your primary care physician or another specialist can refer you to the Pulmonology Department if it is appropriate. Your Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) will send an electronic appointment request and indicate the urgency of the problem and we will try to accommodate your needs. From outside the Mountain View Center, your doctor can fax or mail a referral.

    For All Referrals
Please have all relevant non-PAMF x-rays, scans and records. We will obtain x-rays and records from PAMF.

    For Sleep Disorder Referrals
Please arrange, if possible, to have a bed partner accompany you to the appointment. Also, please bring copies of any prior sleep studies.

    For Pulmonary Function Test
Your doctor should fax the request form to the Pulmonary Department to get the test scheduled. For some of the tests, your doctor should order a blood count (also known as a Hemogram) before the test is done. Testing may take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Plan on not using your inhalers the day of the test unless you are told otherwise.

    When to Call a Doctor

Don't hesitate to call for problems with increasing symptoms. At times, problems can be easily solved by phone advice if addressed early. An early call may avoid hospitalization.

Please call during regular office hours for:

    • Chronic conditions
    • Referrals, forms or records
    • Routine questions about medications, lab and X-ray results, and other non-urgent problems
    • Medication refills: Call your pharmacy about 7 days before using the last dose.
    Emergencies
Serious urgent breathlessness may necessitate a call to the paramedics. Please also call the pulmonary specialist on call.

If you are planning to drive to the emergency room, please also call the pulmonary specialist on call first.

    After Hours
A pulmonary specialist is on call at all times and can be reached at 650-934-7000 or 408-739-6000. Please call only for urgent problems, but do not hesitate to call if you need help. A phone call may prevent an emergency room visit or hospital stay.

Avoid after-hour calls for refills or routine problems.
