An excretory urogram is an x-ray examination of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

A substance dissolved in water will be injected into a vein by the radiologist. This is then filtered out of the blood stream by the kidneys, passing through the kidneys into the bladder to be eliminated in the urine.

The substance contains iodine which casts an image on the x-ray film in the same way the calcium in the bones allows them to be seen on the X-ray film.

You will be asked to limit your fluid intake to aid the kidneys in concentrating the substance in the urine. If your know your kidney function is seriously impaired, if you have long-standing diabetes, or if you have multiple myeloma, please contact the radiologist ahead of time. In these conditions we will want to do the examination without restricting fluids.
