If you're accessing this page, chances are you're having difficulty playing the video clips featured on this site. We have assembled a short FAQ that should be of assistance in the event you're having problems:

  1. I get a "missing image" icon when I attempt to load a page that has media file.

    Possible Explanation:

You don't have RealPlayer installed for the type of browser you're using or you don't have it installed at all. To install RealPlayer, click on the link below:

Hint: The link to download the free "basic player" is towards the middle of the page. That's all you need to view the content on this site.

    Other Possibility:

You are running Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Macintosh. RealMedia clips are not supported on MSIE for the Mac. If you want to access this site on a Mac, you will need Netscape Navigator, which can be downloaded free from http://www.netscape.com.

  2. I get an error message that states: "RealPlayer cannot play this type of clip."

    Possible Explanation:

You are running an older version of RealPlayer that does not recognize the encoding process used for the media files on this site. For reliable playback, you need RealPlayer G2, 7.0, 8.0, or whatever the latest version is. Click on the RealPlayer logo above to download the latest version of the player.

  3. When I load a page that has a media file, RealPlayer launches, but the clip never starts playing.

    Possible Explanation:

You are attempting to access the site from work and your company has a firewall in place to protect its network. Generally, RealMedia needs a special data port to be open through which it streams data. Firewalls do not normally allow the opening of an additional data port. It is however possible to overcome this problem by changing your RealPlayer's settings:

Right-Click on the RealPlayer window and hold the mouse button down until you select the "preferences" menu item. Let go of the mouse button and you will see the following screen:

Click on the "Transport" tab at the top of the screen and you'll see the following:

Check the radio button that says "Use Specified Transport" and then click on the button beside it that says" "RTSP Settings." Clicking on that button will bring up the following screen:

Click on the radio button towards the bottom of the screen that says: "Use HTTP Only." Click on "OK" and then attempt to play back the clip. This setting will force RealPlayer to play back media through the only available port when a firewall is in place.

  4. I have to wait a long time before a clip begins to play.

    Possible Explanation:

RealPlayer's default setting is to buffer as much of the clip as possible to available memory before the clip will play. If you have a lot of RAM installed in your computer, this setting can dramatically increase buffering time.

To override this setting, Right-Click on the RealPlayer window and hold the mouse button down until you select the "preferences" menu item. Let go of the mouse button and you will see the following screen:

Click on the "Connection" tab at the top of the screen and you'll see the following:

Under the "Buffered Play" heading in the middle of the window, click the radio button labled "Buffer at least..." In the field next to the text, fill in the maximum amount of time you'd like a clip to buffer. If you want the clip to start playing immediately, enter "0" in this field. Click on "OK" and attempt to play the clip. Playback should begin immediately.

    Other Possibility:

You have a very slow connection, such as 14.4 or 28.8 kbps dialup. You may want to view the "Slide Show" or "Text Transcript" versions of the presentations on this site since streaming media is highly dependent on the fastest possible connection speed to ensure high quality.
