Health Services Research
The goal of research conducted in the Department of Health Services Research is to reduce the burden of disease and improve the outcomes and processes of health care. Department scientists conduct rigorous, innovative studies that further this goal, including investigations that:
- Provide a better understanding of the individual and societal factors that predispose individuals to engage in high-risk and health-compromising behaviors and of the prevalence of such risk behaviors in various populations;
- Evaluate the comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of novel approaches to identifying at-risk individuals and promoting healthier behavior, including through the use of health information technology and new models of patient-clinician communication;
- Determine the ability of alternatives to traditional patterns of clinician-patient communication and patterns of health care delivery to improve the outcomes of care, especially for patients with chronic health problems;
- Evaluate population-based approaches to improving the outcomes of health care in the clinical setting and in the community;
- Increase understanding of the biological and behavioral mechanisms linking clinical, educational, and health services interventions to improvements in health outcomes; and
- Contribute to the development and appropriate application of experimental and observational research methods and measurement tools, and to the effective use of existing clinical databases for the conduct of health services research.
