Neil Ingels, Ph.D., heads the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiology and Biophysics at the PAMF Research Institute.

Dr. Ingels has been with Research Institute for more than 45 years, studying cardiac biomechanics (heart motion). Over the years, Dr. Ingels and his research team have made breakthrough discoveries that have influenced:

  • Treatment of heart disease

  • Post-operative care for heart transplant and bypass patients

  • Repair of the mitral valve, thin leaflets that open to let blood into the heart's main pumping chamber.
In the 1970s, Dr. Ingels and his team developed a technique to measure cardiac motion by implanting miniature metal markers into the heart during surgery, which could later be seen in stereo X-ray movies. Researchers could play these images back, allowing them to view and measure cardiac movement in detail. Despite advancements in technology, Dr. Ingels' technique remains the most accurate way to measure heart motion today.

Today, Dr. Ingels research on the mitral valve continues. Further studies examine how cardiac cells rearrange themselves throughout the pumping cycle in the heart wall in normal and diseased hearts, potentially improving treatment of heart attack and heart failure.
