Lenard Lesser, M.D., MSHS
Lenard Lesser, M.D., MSHS, is a consulting investigator at Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute (PAMFRI). Previously he was a family physician at PAMF and research physician at PAMFRI. Prior as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he also served as a clinical instructor at the Saban and Venice Family Clinics, teaching primary care to resident physicians and medical students. He teaches Family Medicine at UCSF.
Dr. Lesser is broadly interested in prevention of disease and keeping patients out of the physician’s office. His research focuses on how marketing and the food environment affect what people eat. He is undertaking studies of how interventions based on behavioral economics can motivate people to eat less and move more. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including JAMA, PLoS Medicine, Academic Pediatrics, the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, Annals of Family Medicine, and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Dr. Lesser serves as a policy committee member of the National Physicians Alliance and was a resident member of the board of directors of the North American Primary Care Research Group. He currently serves as an advisor on hospital food environments for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Lesser is also a governing council member of the American Public Health Association.
Dr. Lesser graduated with honors in Nutritional Sciences from Cornell University. He earned an M.D. with distinction in Research from the University of Rochester and a Master’s of Science in Health Services from the UCLA School of Public Health. He completed his clinical training at Tufts University Family Medicine Residency at Cambridge Health Alliance, where he also served as academic chief resident.
