Data Access and Analysis
As part of its core functions, the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) Research Institute supports access to PAMF data and offers data analysis services for both its investigators and others at PAMF. This is in addition to the expertise of investigators and staff working on specific research projects.
Data Access
Information analysts and information technology managers facilitate secure access to PAMF data and ensure that all laws protecting patient privacy are followed. They have developed Web-based tools for PAMF Research Institute investigators to quickly access aggregated information that can facilitate the development of research proposals. They also have the expertise to draw data from several PAMF systems and convert it into analytic files for use by researchers.

Research Consultation
The PAMF Research Institute provides research consultation for PAMF clinicians and management. This service helps investigators formulate -- and often answer -- questions that do not require extensive research studies. The epidemiologists, statisticians and information analysts staffing this service can often use their experience and the electronic records of PAMF to quickly arrive at "first round" answers that may then lead to subsequent major studies.
When necessary, the research consultation service also draws upon the expertise of the researchers at the Research Institute in developing the best ways to approach a question, simultaneously providing the researchers with insight to the issues arising in a major health care delivery system.
