    What is your BMI?

Obesity, or having too much body fat, is determined by calculating your body mass index (BMI), which measures weight for height and is stated in numbers.

A BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese in adults—you are at a higher risk for certain health problems than those with a lower BMI. A BMI greater than 40 is a candidate for bariatric surgery.

A BMI greater than 40 alone, or a BMI between 35 and 40 (between 30 and 40 for Allergan Lap-Band®) as well as diseases associated with obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea.

Use the BMI Calculator National Institutes of Health's tool for calculating your BMI. (link opens to new window)
