Community service is unpaid volunteer work we do to give back to the community. Doing something for others is an important component of a balanced life and frequently adds to our own quality of lives.
One of the biggest benefits most people receive from volunteering is the pride and satisfaction of making a difference and helping others. By volunteering you have the opportunity to:
- Improve lives and strengthen communities
- Connect with your local community
- Gain better problem-solving skills, ability to work in teams, and planning abilities
- Learn to respect others and understand those who are different
- Develop leadership skills
- Make new friends and expand your network
- Have fun!
You can always find something that interests you! If you love animals, why not volunteer at the local animal shelter. Volunteer Match can help you find volunteer opportunities that interest you in your area.
Another great way to volunteer your time is through service trips. There are many programs that provide opportunities to travel and volunteer, both at home and abroad. Volunteering abroad not only gives you a chance to travel and explore, but also allows you to have a positive impact on a specific area. International volunteering also provides an opportunity to learn or practice other languages.
If you're interested in long-term service, you can explore other options such as the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps provides people with an intensive service year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the United States.
Donating your valuable time is a wonderful thing to do for both your community and for yourself, and with so many different volunteering options, make sure you find something you truly enjoy!
